Have you been wondering about how supplements and nutrients are important? Well here are some benefits of these supplements and nutrients.

Let’s get a preview of what we shall talk about in details;

Starting with key nutrients; Key nutrients can be subdivided into two categories. These are the macro nutrients and micro nutrients.

Macronutrients

Macronutrients can be as well sub-divided into:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  • Fats

Micronutrients

Micronutrients also have their own sub-division of:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals

Now coming to the detailed part of these two sub-divisions of nutrients let’s start with the;

Macronutrients

As stated above, macronutrients include proteins, carbohydrates and fats which are essential to the body. Now let’s break them down.

Carbohydrates

(Carbohydrates. By Doctor_Rono)

Carbohydrates can include foods like;

  • Simple carbohydrates which may include glucose, fructose mainly found in fruits e.g.oranges, sucrose mainly found in table sugar and lactose which are a major part of milk sugars.
  • Complex carbohydrates which may include starch (found in potatoes for instance), glycogen found in animal muscles, fibers mainly found in vegetables and cellulose.

Carbohydrates generally are more of energy giving foods. Provides energy to the brain tissues and body muscles for our day to day activities.

Carbohydrates also play a vital role in making sure that proteins are used only for growth and repair of body tissues. In other terms, carbohydrates prevent the use of proteins as energy providers in the body.

Carbohydrates are also essential in the human digestive health which is aided by the fibres. It helps to prevent constipation.

Proteins

(Proteins. By Doctor_Rono)

Proteins are found in both animals and plants. The animal based proteins include foods like beef, salmon and eggs while the plant based proteins include foods like lentils, beans and peas.

Proteins are mainly used by the body for growth and repair of worn out tissues.

Proteins also are used for enzyme and hormone productions and other body chemicals.

Can also be used to boost immunity.

Fats

(Popcorn. By Doctor_Rono)

Fats are classified into saturated fats (meat) unsaturated fats (olive oil) and trans fats e.g. snack foods (popcorn)

Fats are a source of energy to the body but are mainly stored to be used by the body later on.

Fats are also essential in absorption of vitamins like vitamins A, D, E and K

In general macronutrients help in maintaining energy balance and overall health of the body.

Micronutrients

Micro nutrients include vitamins and mineral salts. Vitamins include vitamins A, C, D, E and B (B1, B2, B3, B6, B9 and B12).

Minerals include calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc.

In general vitamins and minerals work hand in hand in :

  • Supporting various metabolic processes and enzymes functions.
  • Growth and development of body tissues most witnessed in children and adolescents.
  • Mainly in disease preventions and deficiencies of health.

Macronutrients are majorly required in small amounts that can be absorbed by the body and for functioning of the body tissues.

Now let’s dig in to supplements;
